"This bull
has killed me." were the last words of a Spanish matador as he lay dying
in the ring. He had made a tragic mistake. Thinking the bull was dead after
repeated thrusts with his sword, the matador had turned his back on the
bleeding animal to acknowledge the cheers of the crowd. Unknown to him,
the bull was not dead. Suddenly, the bull, lunged at the unsuspecting matador
severely puncturing his body.
Just as
the matador mistakenly thought he had conquered his adversary and turned
his back on the bull, we must never turn our back on satan. We must never
become so sure of ourselves that we think we are above falling into one
of satan’s traps and committing an act of sin.
Peter
admonishes us to "be vigilant (watchful); because your adversary the devil,
as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (1Peter 5:8).
