 One dark night the gatekeeper at a dangerous railway crossing swung his lantern to signal an oncoming vehicle to stop. The motorist never stopped and was killed by the oncoming train. An investigation was held and the gatekeeper was asked if he had swung his lantern to warn the motorist. "I did swing the lantern, but there was no light in it," he confessed.
The gatekeeper's lantern is symbolic of the church. Without the fire of the Holy Ghost in the church, there will be no light to warn the sinner to turn from his evil way. It's not enough to "swing the lantern" as it were and go through the motions of being a Christian. We must get on fire for Jesus and let His light shine through us.
“Ye are the light of the world” (Mat. 5:14); therefore, “let your light shine” (Mat. 5:16); and “speak to warn the wicked from his way” (Ezek. 33:8).
