In 1872, the U.S. Congress passed the Amnesty Act which pardoned most Confederate veterans of the Civil War so as to reconcile them back into the United States. The word amnesty is derived from the Greek word meaning to forget. Once these confederates were pardoned, their rebellion against the U.S. government was forgotten. Their record was clean. They could no longer be punished for their offenses.
When God sent His son, Jesus, into the world to die on the cross for the remission of man's sins, He was in essence passing His own Amnesty Act. When we confess our rebellion against God and ask Jesus to be our Lord and Saviour, our sins are forgiven. Our record in Heaven is washed clean with the blood of Jesus.
Therefore, there is no punishment for past sins. For "there is...no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit" (Romans 8:1).
