Located on the shore of the Thames River in London, England is a strong fortress consisting of almost 20 towers known as the Tower of London. Over the centuries, the Tower has served many purposes, one of which was a place of refuge. In the summer of 1381, when the peasants of the land revolted against the government, King Richard II and his royal court found safety and shelter within its mighty walls as the defiant forces raged without.
Just as the Tower of London served as a place of refuge in the time of King Richard's calamity, the Lord Jesus Christ will also be a refuge for us in the time of our calamity.
For "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1). He is "a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe" (Prov.18:10).
