A young man was tried for crimes he committed and sentenced to be executed at the ringing of the town bell, precisely at sunup, the following morning. That night, his elder brother climbed the bell tower and tied himself to the bell's gigantic clapper. When the bell would not ring, the next morning, an investigation revealed the lifeless body of the brother which had been badly bruised and bloodied from the the bell’s crushing blows. Since the bell did not ring at the time prescribed, the sentence could not be carried out. Therefore, the fellow's debt to society was forgiven. His life had been redeemed by his brother’s sacrifice.
Such was Jesus' sacrificial love for us on the cross of Calvary where “He was wounded for our transgressions (and) bruised for our iniquities," (Isaiah 53:5). He "put away (our) sin by the sacrifice of Himself," (Hebrews 9:26). Therefore, "there is...no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus," (Romans 8:1). For "we have redemption through His blood," (Ephesians 1:7).
