 Ballast is the material used to stabilize large oceangoing cargo ships. If these massive vessels are not properly weighted down with cargo, ballast is added. This prevents the ship from riding too high above the water-line where it would become top-heavy and capsize.
Like these large ships, Christians also need a certain amount of ballast to keep us spiritually stable. This ballast often comes in the form of trials which keep us humble and dependent upon the Lord, thus preventing us from riding too high upon our own ambitions.
Therefore, "beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is (come) to try you..." (1 Peter 4:12) for it is from the Lord “that he might humble...and...prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end” (Deut. 8:16).
