When a piece of dry seasoned wood is placed upon a fire, it is consumed quietly by the flames. But, if a piece of green wood is placed upon a fire, the flame does not have an immediate affect upon it. The green wood twists and turns--giving off a hissing sound until it becomes dry enough for the fire to consume it.
Christians, also, are like firewood. We are either as green wood--full of the sap of self-will, squirming and hissing forth complaints; or we are as seasoned firewood, willing to be quietly spent for the glory of God--burning brightly in a sin-darkened world.
Dear child of God, what kind of wood are you? Jesus said, “ye are the light of the world” (Mat. 5:14). Therefore, as seasoned firewood, “let your light...shine...” (Mat. 5:16).
