William Barret Travis (1809-1836) was the Texas commander at the Battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836. Several weeks before the final battle, as the Mexican dictator Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his army began laying siege to the Alamo, Travis wrote a letter to the people of Texas saying, "I am besieged... (and) ...have sustained a continual bombardment... The enemy has demanded... surrender... (but) I shall never surrender nor retreat."
Like Santa Anna, satan and his army of imps constantly attempt to lay siege to the saints of God by bombarding us with tribulations in an effort to get us to surrender and retreat from serving Jesus. But we, like William Travis, must stand fast and never give up. We may lose a battle now an then, as did those at the Alamo; but praise God we shall win the war, "if we hold fast... unto the end" (Heb. 3:6).
