 Air fresheners and scented candles of various kinds are available to aid us in keeping our homes smelling good. But, if the odor is coming from garbage stored in a wastebasket, an air freshener's effectiveness is limited. The stink will never go away completely until the trash is emptied.
In Romans 3:23, God tells us that, we "all have sinned." Sin in our lives is like garbage in a wastebasket -- it stinks. Our spiritual trash must be emptied. To do this, we must confess our sins to God and ask His forgiveness. For "the LORD spake... saying... when a man or woman shall commit any sin... they shall confess their sin..." (Num. 5:5,6,7). And "if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and... cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
"Let us therefore come... unto the throne of grace..." (Heb. 4:16) and "confess our sins" (1 John 1:9) that we may become "unto God a sweet savour of Christ" (2 Co. 2:15).
