During the 1930's, Nazi Germany, in anticipation of war, did not want to be dependent upon imported cotton. Therefore, the government began mass-producing a synthetic silk known as rayon. Large amounts of caustic soda were needed to manufacture the rayon. The down-side was that a toxic waste by-product called chlorine resulted from the manufacture of the caustic soda. A new problem arose of what to do with the unwanted chlorine. After much research, it was discovered that chlorine could be used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC), also known as vinyl. Thus chlorine, a once unwanted waste by-product, became a useful ingredient in the making of plastics.
Perhaps, at times, you feel unloved and unwanted like chlorine was in the 1930's. "Be of good cheer" (Mt 14:27). For just as chlorine had a useful purpose, God also loves you and has a useful purpose for your life. "To every thing there is a... purpose..." (Ecc 3:1) and that "thing" includes your life. Therefore, "Be... of... good courage..." (Josh 1:9). For "all things work together for good to them that love God..." (Rm 8:28).
