Ordinary iron ore is not very useful because of its many impurities. With the aid of a blast furnace, a lot of impurities are removed to make pig iron. This type of iron is not very useful either, because it still has too many impurities. It must go through the furnace another time. The result is wrought iron, which has many uses. But, because of its lack of strength, it cannot be used in really big jobs such as building skyscrapers and long bridges. For such projects, steel is required. Steel is much stronger than iron because it has nearly all of its carbon impurities removed.
Christians are a lot like iron and steel. Pig iron Christians are those who have been born again, but cling to the pleasures of the world and refuse to allowed God to remove all their sinful impurities. Wrought iron Christians have a more perfect walk with God. In many ways, they are useful in His service. Yet, they still have a few impurities left behind by the "old man" which holds them back from being used in greater ways. It is the steel Christians, who forsake every sinful impurity and, "walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit" (Romans 8:4) who are spiritually strong enough for the really tough jobs.
What kind of Christian are you?
