The childhood nursery rhyme "Ring Around The Rosey" tells of London's tragic Great Plague (1665-1666) which killed an estimated 100,000 people. Ring Around The Rosey describes the plague's ring shaped rosey red rash on the skin. A Pocketful Of Posies tells of sweet smelling flowers and herbs carried by people, in their pockets, to ward off bad odors believed to transmit the disease. Ashes Ashes, We All Fall Down refers to the burning of the dead bodies.
What appeared to be another tragedy a year later in 1666, the Great Fire of London, turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It brought an end to the Great Plague by killing off the rats and fleas that carried the disease.
Like the Great Fire of London, we may also have fiery trials that seem tragic at first; but Jesus encourages us to, "be of good cheer" (John 16:33), for "God worketh all things together for good to them who love Him" (Romans 8:28 paraphrased).
