Located between the 87th and 91st floor of the 1,667 feet tall "Taipei 101" skyscraper, in Taiwan, hangs a gigantic 18 foot diameter steel ball, weighing 730 tons. This pendulum device is called a "Tuned Mass Damper." It acts as a stabilizer to prevent the building from swaying too much during earthquakes or high winds. When the building begins to sway sideways, the potentially destructive forces of motion are transferred to the damper and absorbed by the downward pull of the weighted ball. Thus, the building is restored to its proper position.
At times we encounter unstable circumstances -- times when our lives seem to be swaying out of control. At such times, Jesus Christ is there for His children. Like a Mass Damper, He absorbs our fears and restores "rest to our souls" (Mt 11:29 paraphrased) "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer..." (Jn 16:33). "Be not afraid... saith the Lord: for I am with you... to deliver you..." (Jer 42:11). "Fear not: believe only..." (Lk 8:50).
