Cyrus Field (1819-1892) became a pioneer in international communications in 1854 when he envisioned laying a cable on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean between the United States and Great Britain. His first attempt to lay cable in 1857 resulted in a breakage after hundreds of miles of cable were laid off the coast of Ireland. Three more unsuccessful attempts were made later that year. On August 5, 1858 his fourth attempt met with success. Three weeks later the cable stopped working. The American Civil War delayed an unsuccessful fifth attempt until 1865. Finally in 1866, after nine years of failure, success was achieved on his sixth try.
The path to success is often strewn with difficulty. When our endeavors are met with repeated failure, we must be as Cyrus Field and never quit trying. By God's grace "we shall reap, if we faint not" (Gal 6:9b).
