On April 24, 1902 the Pelee volcano, located on the Caribbean island of Martinique, sent up a column of smoke and ash. Four days later strong rumblings were heard in the nearby city of St. Pierre. Fearing an all out eruption, many ships left the harbor. Thinking they could quickly sail away if things got too bad, the captains of eighteen ships stayed at anchor. On the morning of May 8th, the entire side of the main crater suddenly blew open. Fireballs of lava, stone, and ash engulfed the city and its harbor. Within minutes, everything lay waste. It happened so fast that the ship's captains never had a chance to make their escape.
Let us not be like those captains and wait until it's too late -- too late to escape "the punishment of... sin" (Lam 4:6). "Come now... saith the Lord" (Is 1:18a). "Lay aside every... sin" (Heb 12:1) and "be forgiven" (Acts 8:22). For "though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow" (Is 1:18b).
