On April 15, 1865, Andrew Johnson (1808-1875) became the 17th president of the United States, in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln's (1809-1865) assassination. Animosity between the new President and leaders on Capitol Hill intensified until 1868, when impeachment proceedings were held to remove Johnson from office. Johnson won out but his reputation had been badly tarnished. After his presidency, he fought to restore his good name. In 1875, his efforts met with success when he become the first former U.S. president to ever make a comeback by being elected to the U.S. Senate.
When lied about and put down, don't seek revenge. Be like Johnson and vindicate yourself "with well doing (that) ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men" (1Pe 2:15).
