Perhaps one of the most perplexing personalities in seafaring history is England's Captain William Bligh (1754-1817). In December 1787, Bligh set sail for Tahiti in command of the Bounty on a mission to collect breadfruit trees. In April 1789 several of his crew mutinied. They put him and 18 loyal crewmen adrift in a small open boat. Faced with insurmountable odds of survival, Bligh courageously overcame his predicament by navigating over 3,600 miles of open seas in 47 days to the island of Timor, without the loss of life. In 1794, the Royal Society of Arts presented Bligh with a medal for his outstanding feat of navigation.
When faced with tough challenges, be like Captain Bligh and don't whine nor give up. "Commit thy way unto the Lord" (Ps 37:5) "and he shall direct thy paths" (Pro 3:6). He bringeth the weary travelers on the sea of life "unto their desired haven" (Ps 107:30). "God is... a very present help in trouble" (Ps 46:1). He "will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Heb 13:5).
