Simon Bolivar (1783-1830) was a Venezuelan admirer of the American revolution. He dreamt of the day his country would be free of Spanish rule. In 1811, he lead a rebellion that won independence for Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador. These countries were united into the republic of Gran Columbia of which Bolivar was made president. Jeleaous political enemies accused him of being a tyrant and tried to kill him. Exhausted by years of war, he resigned as president and died nearly friendless at the age of 47. Today he is remembered as The Liberator.
Years earlier another liberator, Jesus Christ, came to earth that we might be "made free from sin" (Rm 6:18). Like Bolivar, His enemies hated Him. They killed Him and He died nearly friendless on the cross of Calvary. Because "the servant is not greater than his lord" (Jn 13:16), "ye (also) shall be hated... but he that shall endure unto the end... shall be saved" (Mk 13:13). Therefore "fight the good fight of faith" (1Ti 6:12) and "endure hardness (afflictions), as a good soldier of Jesus Christ" (2Ti 2:3).
