On the morning of July 4, 1863 the Confederate army began its retreat back to Virginia, after its defeat at the battle of Gettysburg. The shortest way home was through the Monterey Pass near Waynesboro, PA. That night the pursuing Union Calvary lost their way as they traveled through the darkness in a terrible thunderstorm. Twelve year old Hetty Zelinger met them as she walked to her nearby home. After warning them that the Confederates were up ahead, she lead them to the pass. The outcome of the six hour battle that followed brought good success to the Union army.
When you, like the Union Calvary, find yourself lost in the midst of dark and stormy circumstances; "fear not, neither be dismayed" (Deu 31:8). For, like little Hetty, Jesus has promised "I will come to you" (Jn 14:18) and "lead thee by the way that thou shouldest go" (Isa 48:17) "and... thou shalt have good success" (Jos 1:8).
