In 1746 Admiral Duc d'Anville (1709-1746) set sail from France with a fleet of over 70 ships and 13,000 men to drive the British from Nova Scotia, burn Boston, ransack New England, and plunder the British West Indies. Massachusetts' Governor William Shirley (1694-1771) responded to the impending danger by declaring a "Day of Prayer and Fasting." Bostonians gathered at the Old South Meeting House where Rev. Thomas Prince prayed, "Send Thy tempest Lord upon the water... scatter the ships of our tormentors." Soon thereafter, the French fleet was hit by a hurricane and the ships were scattered. Many soldiers became ill and died. D'Anville himself died within days after reaching landfall.
Truly "the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither His ear heavy, that it cannot hear" (Isa 59:1). For "the Lord has said, I have... seen the affliction of my people... and have heard their cry... I will bring you... out of... affliction" (Ex 3:7,17). As Jehovah God delivered the Bostonians, so shall He also deliver you when you "doubt not" (Mt 21:21) and pray "the prayer of faith" (Jam 5:15).
