Bad Company

Go from the presence of a foolish man...  (Proverbs 14:7)

Wisdom     Reinhardt Schwimmer (1900-1929) was a young optometrist from Chicago. During the 1920's, he developed a bad habit of hanging out with gangster Bugsy Moran and his mob. On February 14, 1929, Dr. Schwimmer was spending the day with his underworld friends at a garage on Chicago's north side. At 10:30 a.m. members of Al Capone's gang staged a fake police raid, lined the seven occupants of the garage against a wall and gunned them down. It was the worst gangland slaying in history. It was the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
Reinhardt Schwimmer wasn't really a bad guy. He wasn't even a gangster. His only crime was keeping company with the wrong crowd. His foolishness cost him his life. Proverbs 13:20 says, "He that walketh with wise men shall be wise, but a companion of fools shall be destroyed." Let us therefore be careful about the company we keep, lest we end up like Dr. Schwimmer.
