The turning of a plant towards the sun is called phototropism (foe-ta-tro-piz-em). It's a plant's way of growing closer to its light source. A growth hormone called auxin, which derives its name from the Greek word auxein meaning "to increase," is the key ingredient that brings this process about. Auxin is found in the cells of a plant farthest away from the light, on the shady side. It's presence causes the cells to elongate and increase in length, resulting in a one-sided growth. This procedure enables the plant to turn and follow the light.
Just as a plant will wither and die without light, so shall the soul of man. Jesus said "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me... shall have... life" (Jn 8:12). Therefore, "let us walk in the light of the Lord" (Isa 2:5). For "blessed is the people that... walk... in the Light" (Ps 89:15).
