Jozef Damien (1840 - 1889) was a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium who in 1864 traveled to Hawaii as a missionary. While there he saw the need for someone to go and minister to the spiritual and physical needs of the lepers quarantined on the island of Molokai. In 1873 he traveled to the island and made himself a martyr of charity. He wrote "...I make myself a leper with the lepers to gain all to Jesus Christ." He spent the next sixteen years there building chapels and children's homes, dressing wounds, making coffins, and digging graves. In 1884, he contracted leprosy and died on April 15, 1889 at the age of 49.
The apostle Paul said, " I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some" (1Co 9:22). Jozef Damien did as much when he allowed himself to become a leper in order to win the lepers to Christ. "He that winneth souls is wise" (Prov 11:30). Therefore, let us "go and do... likewise" (Lk 10:37).
