 Henrich Suso (1295-1366) was a German Dominican friar who traveled about teaching the word of God. During one of his trips, a woman falsely accused him of fathering her child. An acquaintance of the woman offered to destroy the baby so that the gossip would quickly be forgotten. Suso refused to be party to such a plan. Instead he affectionately took and raised the child. His decision made him look guilty, causing much criticism and ridicule. Like Jesus who "held His peace and answered nothing" (Mk 14:61) when falsely accused, Suso suffered in silence. Years later, as she lay dying, the accusing woman confessed that Heinrich was not the father.
Sometimes silence is the best response. For "truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment" (Pro 12:19).
