After a Civil War battle fought at Shiloh, Tennessee, a Union Army officer found a lean raw-boned horse on the battlefield. Looking ugly and good for nothing, the officer sent him as a joke to General Ulysses S. Grant's aide-de-camp, Colonel Lagow. Lagow gave the critter to Grant, who realized the animal was a thoroughbred of great value. Grant named him Kangaroo and gave him much loving care. As a result, Kangaroo developed into a fine mount. Grant rode him into battle during the Vicksburg campaign. It was there that Grant made a name for himself, by opening up the Mississippi River to Union traffic. In an area of the Vicksburg National Military Park known as Grant's Circle, General Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) has been memorialized, in the form of a statue, sitting atop Kangaroo.
Perhaps you, like Kangaroo, are at a low point in your life and also need some loving care. If so, "be of good cheer" (Act 27:22) for the Lord "careth for you" (1Pe 5:7) and "will… have compassion upon thee" (Deu 30:3). "He shall lift you up" (Jas 4:10) and "do thee good at thy latter end" (Deu 8:16).
