On August 24, 1814, during the War of 1812 between Great Britain and the United States, the British set fire to Washington, DC burning the White House, Capitol Building, and other public buildings. The next day as the fires burned out of control, a gigantic tornado-like storm brought heavy rains that extinguished the fires. Many British soldiers were killed when the buildings they took shelter in were ripped apart by powerful winds. The redcoats were so battered and demoralized that they decided to cut their occupation short. One of the British officers ask a Washingtonian, "Great God, Madam, is this the kind of storm to which you are accustomed...?" She replied, "No, sir, this is a special interposition of Providence to drive our enemies from the city."
The same Jehovah God who delivered the Washingtonians is still in the deliverance business today. Therefore when faced with great trials, "be not afraid... for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord" (Jer 1:8).
