While still a young man, Thaddeus Stevens (1792-1868) moved from Vermont to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where he became a successful lawyer. In 1833 he was elected to the Pennsylvania state legislature where he served for eight years. In 1848, 1850 and 1858 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. While there he distinguished himself as a fierce opponent of slavery and fought hard to bring about its end. As he reached his seventies, his health began to fail. He was able to remain active in politics by the aid of two assistants, Joseph Reese and John Chauncey, who carried him about in a special chair.
As Reese and Chauncey lifted up and carried Stevens about, "the Lord... shall lift you up" (Jas 4:10) also and "carry you" (Isa 46:4). "For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways... (and) ...bear thee up in their hands" (Ps 91:11,12).
