In April 1992 Christopher McCandless (1968-1992) hitchhiked to Alaska and set out on foot to explore the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. Previous success at survival, during other less harsh adventures, may have caused him to underestimate the more difficult challenges of living in the Alaskan wild. Thus he entered the backcountry unprepared for what lay ahead. One hundred days later he wrote in his journal that he was "In Weakest Condition Of Life. Death Looms As A Serious Threat." In September his 66 pound partially decomposed body was found by a hunter. An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was starvation.
Like the adventurer Chris McCandless, we also have a journey we must one day take. A trip out into eternity. Let us therefore not go unprepared. "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ" (Act 16:31) and "prepare to meet… God" (Amos 4:12). For Jesus has promised, "he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live" (Jn 11:25).
