On May 20th 1935, five days before he was to compete in the intercollegiate Big Ten Conference Championships, 21 year old field and track athlete Jesse Owens (1913-1980) fell down a flight of stairs and badly injured his back. On the morning of the competition, he could barely bend enough to touch his knees. He certainly did not feel up to the challenge that lay before him. Nevertheless Jesse walked to the starting line for the 100 yard dash. He later stated that as he got down on his haunches, the pain "disappeared as if by a miracle." After a slow start, he finished in 9.4 seconds equaling the world record. Within the next 45 minutes, he went on to set five world records in other events.
Perhaps you, as Jesse, are facing a difficult challenge that you don’t feel up to. If so, "commit thy way unto the Lord" (Ps 37:5) and "walk by faith" (2Cor 5:7). For "if ye have faith… nothing shall be impossible unto you" (Mt 17:20). "You can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth you" (Phip 4:13).
