Joshua Chamberlain (1828-1914) was a college professor who joined the Union Army and commanded the 20th Maine Infantry during the American Civil War battle of Gettysburg. He and his regiment, were ordered to stand their ground on the peak of Little Round Top and prevent the enemy from out flanking the Union forces positioned there. Repeatedly the enemy flooded in upon them. Each time they stood fast. Exhausted and running low on ammunition, Chamberlain courageously lead a bayonet charge which routed the Confederates and prevented them from taking the hill. Had the Confederates taken it, they would probably have won the battle and possibly the war. Chamberlain's heroic conduct earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor and distinguished him as the "Lion of Little Round Top".
When the cares of life assault you and "come in like a flood" (Isa 59:19), be as Chamberlain and "stand fast" (Php 4:1). "Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee" (Ps 55:22).
