George Westinghouse (1846-1914) was a great American inventor and industrialist. Among his many inventions is the air brake for safely stopping trains. He also devised a means of generating and safely transmitting alternating electrical current over long distances into homes and businesses. Some of the companies he organized to manufacture and market his many inventions are the Westinghouse Air Brake Company, the Union Switch and Signal Company, the Westinghouse Machine Company, and the Westinghouse Electric Company. Reflecting upon his many accomplishments in life he once commented, “If someday they say of me that in my work I have contributed something to the welfare and happiness of my fellow man, I shall be satisfied.”
Westinghouse's ambitions were noble indeed. Let us therefore be like-minded and also "be rich in good works" (1Tim 6:18), striving for satisfaction in life by serving God in such a way so as to advance the welfare and happiness of others. For "faith without works is dead" (Jam 2:20).
