When the American Civil War broke out in 1861, Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) joined the Union Army and rose to the rank of general. He came to the attention of President Abraham Lincoln in March 1862 after his capture of Confederate Forts Henry and Donalson in Tennessee. Soon afterwards, he and his troops fought and won against the Confederates at Shiloh. At that time, Shiloh was the bloodiest battle of the war. The terrible lose of life prompted much criticism against Grant. Politicians in Washington urged Lincoln to replace him. Lincoln refused saying, "I can't spare the man. He fights." Even Grant's enemy, Confederate General Longstreet, admitted Grant's determination to fight and win when he stated, "That man will fight us every day and every hour till the end of this war."
Like Grant "the fighter", the saints of God should also be fighters. This world is a battleground for our soul, not a recreation room. If we are to win, we must not play around at serving God. We must daily "fight the good fight of faith" (1Tim 6:12) that we may obtain "the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love Him" (Jam 1:12).
