During a 1921 raid on David Williams' (1900-1975) moonshine operations, a deputy sheriff was killed. Convicted of second-degree murder, Williams was sentenced to 30 years in prison. During his early years there, Williams spent many days in solitary confinement. To keep from going berserk, he took control of his thoughts and focused them on ways to make more efficient firearms. He is quoted as saying, “You will never know how many thousands of times I thought and rethought these ideas while hurting in that box.” Later while working in the prison blacksmith shop, Williams began making gun parts from scraps of wood and iron. Impressed with his inventions, the warden permitted him to develop his ideas. His ingenuity demonstrated his usefulness to society and lead to his early release. Remembered today as "Carbine Williams," his creativity aided in the development of the M1 carbine rifle which was used by American servicemen during WWII.
Like Williams, if we want our life to amount to something good, we also must take control of our thoughts. Let us therefore do as the Apostle Paul instructed and "bring... every thought to the obedience of Christ" (2Cor 10:5b).
