According to folklore, in the 1850's George Crum (1824-1914) was working as a chef at Moon's Lake House restaurant in Sarasota Springs, NY when a dissatisfied customer sent his order of fried potatoes back to the kitchen several times complaining that they were too thick. In a desperate effort to please the patron, George sliced the potatoes paper thin, fried them in oil, and seasoned them with lots of salt. When he presented them to his finicky customer, the gentlemen declared how delicious they tasted. Before long Crum's Saratoga Potato Chips were in great demand. They became a specialty at Moon's Lake House. Later they were bagged and sold in grocery stores. Crum's desire to please paid off. In 1860 he was blessed with his own restaurant where, it is said, he included a basket of chips on every table.
As Crum learned, it pays to please others. It pays even more to please God for "whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight" (1Jn 3:22).
