Earthly Treasure

He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied...

(Ecclesiastes 5:10)

Money_Bag     While en route from Downs, England to China, the British troopship Kent caught fire on February 28, 1825 and sank. As one sailor prepared to abandon ship he tied a handkerchief full of coins about his neck. In the process of lowering himself into a lifeboat, he slipped and was pulled beneath the waves by the weight of his treasure.
Like the sailor, King Solomon also had trouble with his treasure. He grumbled "I gathered... silver and gold... and behold all was vanity and vexation of spirit"
(Ecc 2:8,11). If happiness was the result of riches, Solomon should have been a very happy man. "Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith" (Prov 15:16). Therefore, "if riches increase, set not your heart upon them" (Ps 62:10) that you be not like the foolish sailor whose earthly treasure pulled him down to ruin.
