In 1910, publisher William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951) offered a $50,000 prize to the first aviator to fly coast to coast, in either direction, within 30 days from start to finish. Cal Rodgers (1879-1912) accepted the challenge and began his flight at Sheepshead Bay, in the state of New York, on September 17, 1911. Forty-nine days later, after 82 hours of actual flying time, 75 stops and 16 crashes, he completed his journey on November 5th in Pasadena, California. Rodgers had flown 4,231 miles and used 1,230 gallons of gasoline. Although forced to endure many difficulties along the way, Cal refused to quit. He chose to finish what he started and became the first person to complete the transcontinental journey by airplane across the United States.
Winners aren't people who never fail, they are people like Cal Rodgers who never quit. Therefore should you feel like a failure and be tempted to quit, "be of good courage" (Ps 31:24) and "faint not" (Gal 6:9); for "God… giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1Cor 15:57) if we "hold fast... unto the end" (Heb 3:6).
