Sam Cooke (1931-1964) was an American singer who grew up singing gospel music until 1957 when he crossed over to performing secular music. His first single sold over a million copies and made him an instant success. At age 33, on December 11,1964, Sam was in Los Angeles, California where he hooked up with a prostitute named Elisa Boyer. The two of them checked into a motel. Soon thereafter, Boyer left with Sam's wallet and most of his clothes. Wearing little more than a sports jacket, Sam broke into the motel manager's office looking for Boyer. Instead of getting his pants and money back, he got shot.
Had Sam continued to serve God and sing gospel music, he wouldn't have been caught dead on a dirty motel floor, with his pants down. He died so unexpectedly that he didn't have time to make things right with God. Don't make the same mistake Sam did. While there is still time, "seek… the Lord" (Isa 55:6) and "prepare to meet… God" (Amos 4:12) that you may "inherit eternal life" (Mk 10:17).
