The Covenant of Salt comes from an ancient practice when people carried with them a small pouch of salt. When two or more people would enter into an agreement they would each take some salt from their pouch and mix it together. They would then break some bread and dip it into the salt and eat it together. When they were finished they would gather up the remaining salt, divide it equally and put it back into their pouches. The only way to break the salt covenant would be to separate each grain of salt from the others pouch and return it to its original owner's pouch. Since this was impossible to do, the Covenant of Salt remained in effect forever and could never be broken.
Such are the promises of God. When life gets you down and leaves you feeling broken, you can always stand on the unbreakable promises of God. For He has promised, "thou shalt not be forgotten of me" (Isa 44:21). "I am with you always" (Mt 28:20). "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Heb 13:5). "I will help thee" (Isa 41:10) and "preserve thee" (Isa 49:8).
