 On June 3, 1861, an eighteen year old Confederate soldier named James Hanger (1843-1919) was struck by a Yankee cannon ball and lost his left leg. Instead of wallowing in self pity, the former engineering student designed and made himself a revolutionary new type of hinged artificial leg. He then went into business making prosthetic legs for other wounded war veterans like himself. Later he commented, "I am thankful for what once seemed to me nothing more than a blunder of fate, but proved instead to be a great opportunity." God not only provided a way for Hanger to help himself, but in so doing enabled him to help others also.
Just as God turned James Hanger's misfortune into something good, He will also "turn your sorrow into joy" (Jn 16:20 paraphrased).
