In the 1400's, Islamic powers controlled the Middle East making the overland trade routes to the Orient dangerous to travel. Desiring to find a safer sea route and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ along the way, Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) approached the Spanish monarchy for support. In January 1492, they agreed to finance his journey and on August 3, he set sail into the unknown regions of the Atlantic Ocean. Challenged by trials and storms along the way, he never lost faith in God to take him safely to the other side. His faith was rewarded on October 12, when he sighted what is now part of the Bahamas. In thanks to Jehovah God for a safe passage, he named the island San Salvador, which means Holy Saviour.
When you, like Columbus, are faced with troubling challenges on the stormy sea of life, "have faith in God" (Mk 11:22) for He has promised "I am with you to… deliver you" (Jer 42:11). "I will… make a way" (Isa 43:19) and "will help thee" (Isa 41:10) "in time of need" (Heb 4:16).
