On January 6, 1969, several days before the Super Bowl III game between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Jets, the Jets' quarterback Joe Mamath (b: 1943) attended a dinner honoring him as pro-football's most outstanding player of the year for 1968. When he got up to speak, a heckler shouted that the Colts could easily defeat the Jets. Namath responded by saying, "Hey, I got news for you. We're going to win Sunday, I guarantee you..." The next morning the front page of The Miami Herald carried the headline, "Namath Guarantees Jet Victory." Many fans considered the Jets to be the underdogs against the Colts and regarded Joe's prediction as nothing more than a brag statement. But on game day, they found out differently when the Jets won 16-7.
Like the Jets, others may treat you like an underdog, but that doesn't mean you're a loser. As children of God, we are "more than conquerors" (Rm 8:37). "We are well able to overcome" (Num 13:30) because "God... giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1Cor 15:57).
