In 1927 Frank Zamboni (1901-1988) and his brother, Lawrence, built a plant to make block ice for the fruit and vegetable produce industry to keep their products from spoiling during shipment by railway. Eventually the demand for block ice dwindled due to newer technology. The Zamboni brothers decided to put their unused refrigeration equipment to work by building an ice skating rink. Soon they discovered how difficult it was to keep the ice smooth for the skaters. In 1942 Frank designed a machine that removed the ice's rough spots and restored its smoothness. He called it a Zamboni Ice Resurfacer. In the past, manual resurfacing required three people and took over an hour. The job could now be done in just minutes.
Like ice, life also has rough spots. As a Zamboni smoothing out the ice at a skating rink, the Lord has promised "I will go before thee and make the crooked places straight" (Isa 45:2) and "the rough ways... smooth" (Lk 3:5).
