February 18, 2001 was race day at the 43rd Daytona 500 in Daytona, Florida. Dale Earnhardt Sr (1951-2001), winner of seven NASCAR championships and 76 races, was running behind teammate Michael Waltrip (b: 1974), protecting his flank so as to prevent others from passing him. As they entered the last turn of the final lap, just a half mile from the finish, Waltrip was in the lead when Earnhardt's car made contact with another vehicle sending him crashing into a concrete wall at 180 mph. Earnhardt died instantly, sacrificing himself to insure Waltrip's victory. Waltrip later commented, "Dale Earnhardt… got me in victory lane… I owe that guy… everything."
To Dale Earnhardt Sr, love was more than just a word. He loved in deed. He had a "greater love that made him willing to lay down his life for his friend" (Jn 15:13 Paraphrased). Genuine love will cost us something. It cost Dale Earnhardt everything. It cost him his life.
Let us also love others in like manner. Regardless of the cost, "let us not love in word only... but also in deed" (1Jn 3:18).
