In 1953, Patsy Sherman (1930-2008) was doing research for the 3M Company seeking to develop a new type of rubber for making jet fuel lines. Her assistant accidentally spilled some of the compound on her tennis shoe. Using various cleaners, she was unsuccessful in removing it. Over time she noticed that her shoe had gotten dirty everywhere except for where the spill had occurred. After further research and refinement the compound was marketed in 1971 as a fabric protector named Scotchgard. Its purpose was to shield textiles from damaging spills. Its shielding effect is caused by tiny particles that are sticky on one side, allowing them to adhere, and slippery enough on the other side to repel liquids.
Like Scotchgard, "the Lord...is...our shield" (Ps 33:20). Faith in Him repels and "quenches all the fiery darts of the wicked" (Eph 6:16). Therefore put your "trust in the Lord for He is your help and... shield" (Ps 115:11). He "shall preserve you from all evil" (Ps 121:7).
